Heer Army brown leather belt with buckle. Pebbled nickel belt buckle with a relief of the Prussian Emperor's motto "GOTT MIT UNS" and a eagle clutching a swastika symbol. Translated the motto means "God is with us". The back of the buckle is stamped with the manufacturer's initials "RS&S". The leather belt is stamped with "R. Steper & Sohne, LÜDENSCHEID 1937".
Frank Kenwood acquired this belt from the same German guard who killed a Canadian Prisoner of War in cold blood. This event happened when Canadian, British and American prisoners of war were marched from Stalag Luft III prison camp at Sagan, northeast of Berlin to Marlag, a large German naval camp north of Hanover near the Baltic. The unfortunate P.O.W. was gunned down when he had permission to step out of line next to a corn field and was shot by this guard on the pretense that he was attempting to escape.
