Olive was born in Parry Sound, Ontario and came to Hamilton in 1929. She joined the RCAF in 1943 and trained as Wireless Operator in Montreal and then taught wireless to Air Gunners on stations in Ontario and Quebec. After discharge from the RCAF, Olive returned to teaching in Hamilton and then worked with the Big Sister Association for six months. She attended night classes at McMaster University and summer classed at University of Toronto and in the fall of 1946 took a two year course in Social Work.
