On February 21, 1941, a Hudson bomber carrying Dr. Frederick Banting crashed on the shore of Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland while trying to return to the Gander airport after experiencing difficulties. The crash killed 3 of those on board, including Dr. Banting. Only the pilot survived. Five days after the crash, vounteers brought the survior and the bodies of the victims out of the bush to Musgrave Harbour. Two RCAF personnel from Gander were dispatched with a truck to collect the body of Dr. Banting. The donors father, Alonzo Benedict Richardson was was one of them.
