Halifax III Serial No. LW 579 MH-V This Halifax bomber was from #51 Squadron R.A.F. Snaith, Yorkshire. It crashed on 31 March 1944, in Cowleaze Wood near Stokenchurch Bucks returning from a bombing raid on Nuremburg. All seven crew members were killed. This aircraft is believed to have been the 102nd aircraft lost that night out of 105. (Officially 96 were lost over enemy territory.) Crewmen: P/O J. Brookes - Pilot - age 21 F/Sgt D. P. McCormack - Navigator - age 21 Sgt. R. F. Kelley - Bomb aimer - age 20 Sgt. T. S. Connell - Flight Engineer - age 20 Sgt. D. A. Churchill - Wireless operator - age Sgt. S. Glass Mid-upper Gunner - age 23 Sgt. G. W. West - Rear Gunner - age 22 Bob Kelley was borrowed for this one night from P/O Hugh Wastell's crew as their own bomb aimer was sick. Hugh Wastell DFC was grounded for 7 days due to being coned in searchlights over Berlin 28 March 1944.
