Olive was born in Parry Sound, Ontario and moved to Hamilton in 1929. She joined the R.C.A.F. Women's Division in 1943 and trained as a Wireless Operator in Montreal and later taught wireless to Air Gunners on stations in Ontario and Quebec. After her discharge from the R.C.A.F., Olive worked as a teacher in Hamilton as well as with the Big Sister Association for six months. She attended night classes at McMaster University and summer classes at University of Toronto.
