The use of the words of Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae who served as a surgeon during World War I evokes the sacrifices of Canadians who fought in the 1914-1918 war. After the war, Canadians wanted to create a monument to mourn and remember the soldier's sacrifices, which saw the construction of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial built near Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, France. Designed by Walter Allward, the construction of the monument which began in 1925 took 11 years to build and cost 1.5 million dollars. The monument sits on the highest point of the ridge, known during the battle as Hill 145.
