EIGHTY AVIATORS APPLY FOR POST ON LONDON FLIGHT
All Canada Represented in List of Airmen Who Seek to Pilot Plane
EVEN GIRLS WANT TO GO
(Staff Correspondence of The Globe.)
London. Ont., July 10. - Though Canada has yet to conquer the air route to Europe, more than 80 Canadian pilots, navigators and airmen, exclusive of a dozen girls and boys who would be passengers or mechanics, have responded to a call for a crew for the London, Ont., to London, Eng., flight.
Charles Burns, donor of the $25,-00 Carling prize, issued the list of applicants tonight, exclusive of a few who have asked to have their name suppressed. Some are in high station. Out of the list is likely to emerge the crew that will take off from the City of London air port on the first dash from the heart of the continent to Europe in June. Ald. D. F. Glass has named the hop “from the heart of Canada to the soul of the Empire.”
All Canada Represented.
The list shows six from London, seventeen from Toronto, nine from Camp BOrden Military Aviation School, three from Ottawa, two from Vancouver, six from Hamilton, seven from Windsor, five from Montreal, one each from Kamloops. B.C.; Ontario, Cal.; Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; Halifax, Lindsay, Brantford, Hailey-bury; North Battleford, Sask.; Port Arthur, Fort William, Woodstock; Strathmore, Alta.; Galt, and St. John, N.B.; two from Winnipeg; five, mostly ex-Canadians from Detroit, and two from Walkerville. Most of these men are ready to emulate Lindbergh and fly alone. Others, for the benefit to commercial aviation, want to carry passengers.
Mr. Burns stated tonight that the first recommendations are beginning to arrive from the high authorities in Canada who have been consulted and that the time for a selection of the pilot is very near at hand. The man for the job is in the appended official list of applicants. There are many others who want to go as passengers or mere mechanics, but their names have not been announced.
