There are about 3 pages within this archive. The first is an overall layout of how to file for gratuity from the time of service to dissmissal. The first sheet comes from the Paymaster General's office coming from the Canadian Building, Ottawa, ON. This was sent at December 1, 1919. The Memorandum of instructions issued in connection with application for war service- Gratuity Payable to ex-members His Majesty's Forces under P.C 2389 dated December 1, 1919. Ex-service members eligible to return/rehome in Canada. The Gratuity will be calculated at the rate which would have been paid had the applicant been serving in the Canadian Expeditionary Force the Canadian Naval Service the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve, Overseas Division, or the Canadian Air Force in the rank the Pay and allowances of which he was in fact recieving in the Forces in which he was serving but without reference to the special pay or allowances of any appointment. The payment was done monthly of 30/31 days and this letter of Gratuity came from J.G. Langton (Brigadier-General, Paymaster-General). On the back of this letter there is a letter to Royden Foley about the overall memo of leave by someone, however name is not very clear.

The second sheet is titled Militia and Defence coming from Ottawa June 29th, 1920. The address it is coming from states, address to reply: Director S.A. and A.P. Canadian Building Ottawa, ON. Royden was located at Loch Lomand Road, St. John's New Brunswick. This was a letter writing to Lieutenant Foley (R.A.F.) because the application was not completed properly. States, in paragarph 1, part 2, it is necessary to show the date of enlistment and the date of transfer/discharge from each of the units served. The document is to be decalred before the proper official/signatures of 2 people are secured that have the proper knowledge about you and your time served.

The third sheet is the form in which Foley is to fill out to claim the gratuity. It is stamped by S.A. and A.P. on June 28th 1920. Foley was the second Lieutenant in the 251 Sqaudron R.A.F. (imperial service). First Enlistment 152556, cadet, 42nd wing R.F.C (Canadian service). The second section of experience states, Foley as Cadet R.F.C in Toronto and the reason for transfer was because of commission and the next service was that of Lieutenant in the R.A.F. and reason for discharge was Killin-Holme- war being over. He went overseas to Air Ministry London England, per S.S. Toloa sailing from Halifax April 17, 1918, returning to Canada on the S.S. Netagama from Liverpool on November 19, 1919- his position during this journey was unknown. The back of the sheet asks for info about a wife- it is not filled out.
