Provenance
During the Battle of Britain many pilots opted to wear their service dress shoes to fly in, finding that the issued flying boots uncomfortable and cumbersome. This was especially the case when those downed pilots after parachuting to safety sometimes had to walk miles to the nearest town or phone booth.
